In last week’s sermon we talked about wisdom and that even true earthly wisdom exists only in the context of God’s Word. If we would properly understand our place and duties in life, we must understand that we are created by God. He created us with a particular design to carry out His particular purposes. This coming Sunday, we will hear Jesus reiterate again that neither after the fall into sin nor after Jesus accomplishes our salvation on the cross, do the obligations laid upon us by God’s Law cease to apply us. Jesus didn’t come to abolish the Law. He didn’t come so that you no longer needed to worship only the true God, call upon His Name, or observe the Sabbath Day by gathering with His Church. He came precisely because we have failed to do these things and so deserve eternal wrath. He came to keep the Law perfectly as we ought and then to die as our sinless substitute under God’s wrath. He came to lay claim to our unrighteousness and bestow upon us His perfect righteousness. He came to set us free from the foolishness of seeking our own way and walking according to our own sinful desires so that we can now, with the help of the Holy Spirit, live as God created us to live – according to the Ten Commandments. So, rather than freeing you from the Ten Commandments, Christ has freed you to love them and, in faith, live according to them – loving God and loving your neighbor. I look forward to seeing you this coming Lord’s Day as Jesus again bestows His righteousness upon us and leads us on the right path of His commandments.
