We must be careful how we hear the Word of Christ. We need to be active, attentive hearers, listening with faith. The Scriptures are not magical. They don’t bring salvation by simply striking your eardrum. We are reminded in this week’s parable about the sower and the seed that our hearts can be very tough and rocky places, that there are temptations and allurements and worries constantly and actively seeking to steal the Word of Christ away from our hearts. That is why fervent prayer is needed, that we would not only desire to hear the Word but also that we would hear it with a good and honest heart that acknowledges its sin and seeks the salvation which Christ, in His Word, bestows upon us. I look forward to seeing you all this coming Lord’s Day as we hear God’s Word together and pray that it may produce abundant fruit in us all.
