Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Imagine being so enthralled by listening to someone speak for three days that you don’t even stop to think about food! Would that God grant us such eagerness to hear His Word! The people who were following Jesus were so taken with the Gospel and the compassion Jesus was showing the sick and demon-possessed that they wouldn’t leave Him, even to feed themselves. “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” And to think how easy it is for us to hear the words of life. We have Bibles on our phones and on our bookshelves and bedside tables. We can listen to Jesus as we are driving down the road or sitting in the airport. We can travel in our air-conditioned cars to our air-conditioned church and sit at Jesus’ feet as He forgives our sins and teaches us about the kingdom of God and feeds us with the very Bread of Life, Jesus’ Body and Blood. Perhaps because it is so easy to hear the word of God that we grow tired of it. We struggle to sit through long readings without wandering minds. We assume that we will be able to go to church next week. God forgive us for not counting His Word as our greatest treasure and highest good. May He fill each of us with such a fervent longing and love for His Word that we make time every day to hear it. I look forward to seeing you all this coming Lord’s Day and being fed with the living Word of God which alone gives life and salvation.
