Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

“Behold, there was a man before Him who had dropsy.” Dropsy, or edema as we know it today, is very uncomfortable. Fluid begins to collect in the body and the body can’t get rid of it. Everyone at the Pharisee’s house that day knew this man was suffering but, as we are want to often do, they were not paying him any attention. His suffering made them uncomfortable. They didn’t know what to say. They were too busy jockeying to be exalted in the eyes of everyone gathered. But Jesus noticed the man. Jesus, as we should, didn’t care at all about what other people thought of Him. He was interested in the opinions of men or exalting Himself in their eyes. He was interested in the poor man’s suffering. He beholds you in your suffering and it is His will to heal and to help you. And He has invited you to His feast, the feast of His holy Body and His precious Blood, that you may be healed of the sin that has filled your flesh and condemned you. I look forward to seeing you all this coming Lord’s Day.
