Septuagesima

What a joy to be called to labor in the Lord’s vineyard! Each of us, by virtue of our Baptism have been graciously called by the master of the vineyard away from the idle uselessness of unbelief to the richly-rewarding work of the kingdom of God. In this kingdom, every work that springs forth from faith and serves the needs of our neighbor is loved and commended by God and even rewarded. Whether changing a baby’s diaper or developing software or tending to the sick or running corporations or leading family devotions, all of these things are pleasing to God when they are driven by the joy of our salvation and the sacrificial love of those around us. But this work is very often difficult and goes unnoticed. It is met with fierce resistance both from the devil as well as our own flesh. We often find ourselves grumbling and complaining about the work of God’s kingdom as though it is useless and unfruitful and as though we serve a vicious taskmaster rather than a gracious and merciful God. You have been called into the vineyard of Christ through faith and been given a little plot of land to tend and nourish. May God grant you faith and joy in your task and a fervent desire to receive the blessings of His kingdom. I look forward to seeing you this coming Lord’s Day.
