And so it begins. The King of Israel rides into Jerusalem to rule, not from a marble stone surrounded by faithful guards and vaulted counselors, but from the cross surrounded by merciless Roman soldiers and mocking criminals. And there is nothing more wonderful to us! That is exactly what we need our King to do, to ride out and go to war against sin and death and crush the head of the ancient serpent so that he no longer can lay claim to us. We and the whole world need Jesus to ride on in this truly humble majesty and offer up His life in order to rescue us from eternal damnation. And so Jesus gladly does. He rejoices to do this will of His heavenly Father, to die for sinners so that in Him we poor sinners might have the hope of salvation. So let us who have received this great mercy from Him gather in procession with Him, raising and waving our palm branches, urging Him on toward the cross for our salvation. I look forward to gathering with all of you this coming Lord’s Day to raise the loud Hosannas to our King.
