We have been forewarned – the Bridegroom is coming. It is not a question of if but when. That is the most joyous news we can hear! The Bridegroom is coming. What bride doesn’t eagerly await the arrival of her groom? And yet we find ourselves growing sluggish and slothful, tired of waiting, and beginning to wonder if we really want the Bridegroom to come at all. After all, we like our life, we like the things of this world, and being vigilant and keeping lamps trimmed isn’t nearly as fun as indulging our flesh. Waiting is hard. Wake! Though you have indeed fallen into sin because your flesh is weak and grown weary, Christ is still coming and gladly receives all those who have kept the oil of faith full by hearing His Word, clinging to the promises of Holy Baptism, and feasting on the Holy Communion. Come this Lord’s Day with all of Christ’s saints to trim your lamps in eager expectation of our Lord’s coming to take us to our eternal home.
