How strange that in the middle of the season of Lent, a time of fasting, the account of the feeding of the 5000 is placed before us! And yet it is quite appropriate. The crowds who had followed Jesus had run out of food (if they had even brought any) and were unintentionally fasting as they listened to Christ and sought help from Him. Indeed, it was Jesus who brought them out to the wilderness (as He brought the Israelites into the wilderness from Egypt) and to a position of hunger. He did this so that they might learn to recognize that every good and every perfect gift comes from Him. He saw their need. He created their need with the intention of meeting that need in a miraculous way. And behold how He did! He took what seemed useless and completely insufficient and made of it a feast for thousands with plenty of leftovers. The Lord provides. He knows your needs. Lift up your eyes to Him. Let your prayers rise to Him. Seek after the things of His kingdom and know that your daily bread will be given to you. I look forward to seeing you this coming Lord’s Day to be fed by the Lord Jesus.
