Festival of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

When our Lord was transfigured, two individuals who had long ago been called away from this valley of sorrow, appeared with Jesus. As the radiance of Jesus shone Moses and Elijah spoke with Him. St. Matthew doesn’t tell us what they were speaking about, but St. Luke does. Jesus was talking with these two prophets about His exodus which is another way to speak about Christ’s death and resurrection and subsequent ascension to the right hand of the Father. Jesus is the one to whom Moses and Elijah were pointing God’s people. The death of God’s Son in the flesh has always been the plan. There has always and only been one faith. The saints of old were longing for the Messiah and now we celebrate that the Messiah has come and fulfilled the promises of Eden. How profound and full of comfort and strength to know that we share the faith of Moses and Elijah. We don’t worship something new. Christ’s body doesn’t chase after fads or “new” ideas. Jesus Christ is what the saints of old needed and eagerly waited for and He is what we still need today. And just as surely as Moses, Elijah, Peter, James, and John were gathered around the Lord on the mount of transfiguration so too it is our joy gather with them this day around the same Jesus to engage in the holy conversation of His exodus and receive from Him the food that nourishes us in both body and soul as we journey to that day when we will stand shoulder to shoulder with the prophets and apostles and evangelists and martyrs engaged speaking face-to-face with Jesus, rejoicing in His death and resurrection for us. Lord, it is good to be in Your house with our true and eternal family, Your body, the Holy Christian Church. I look forward to gathering with all of you this coming Lord’s Day that we may continue this holy conversation in our Father’s house.
