A right understanding of the angels can be a source of great comfort. God created angels to be his servants and messengers for us. They do not have bodies though we know from Holy Scripture that they can take on an appearance such that they can be seen if God so wills it. We are not to pray to them but we certainly can pray that God would send them to help and defend us. Their existence is further proof that there is an existence beyond what we can see or directly experience. Indeed, there is a spiritual battle being waged all around us at all times, the angels of God rising to the aid of man against the relentless attacks of Satan and his evil angels. Christ drove out demons and those demons are certainly still active in our midst seeking to lead us astray into sin and eternal death. If we do not take this spiritual battle seriously then we will be overcome by Satan and swept away into eternal judgment. There is no aspect of our lives that Satan will not seek to use to harm and deceive us. And if we do not remain vigilant, we will fall into his traps and be lost. Do not despair. God sends His holy angels to help you. You don’t need to know or feel anything. They are carrying out God’s gracious will. And by your confession of the Blood of the Lamb, you will overcome all the hordes of hell and attain the perfect rest of heaven.
