Telling the truth matters. Truth is reality. Truth is comfort. This is especially true when it comes to salvation. There is only one way to salvation – faith in the death and resurrection of the Son of God for the forgiveness of our sins. Any alteration to that formulation is disastrous and leads to eternal death. Any teaching that draws faith away from the word and work of Jesus is a lie that has dripped straight out of Satan’s mouth, and Christians are commanded by Christ to flee from it and those who teach it. Conversely, we are to run towards those who preach God’s Word faithfully because through that preaching Christ saves us and leads us in the truth. Too often Christians refuse to discern what is being said or sung or posted online. We satisfy ourselves with quippy Christian-sounding phrases that are, in truth, lies built upon other lies. And these lies are hurtful to us and to any we share them with. The saying is true – the devil is in the details. He slithers his way into our hearts and ears by hiding among true things and slipping in little bits of poison here and there until finally we have attached ourselves to false teaching and so turned away from the one true Christ and the one true way of salvation. Always listen carefully to what is being said about Jesus and salvation. Don’t let down your guard because the devil will never give up his attempts to deceive you. Read and learn the Scriptures. Come to the Divine Service and to Bible Class so that you may be filled with the truth and armed against all of the devil’s lies. I look forward to seeing you this coming Lord’s Day that we might sit together at the feet of our true Teacher, our Lord Jesus Christ.
